The key - is control

"The benefits of a solar shading system can only be harvested if the system is automatically controlled."

The benefits of a solar shading system in terms of improved indoor comfort, better visual comfort, energy savings and use of natural daylight can only be harvested if the system is automatically controlled. It will then work properly even when the occupant is absent and it will react to the sun and the wind without requiring any attention, which is important for the energy saving aspect.

Automation is the key to performance...

A study was conducted by ESTIA (Building Physics and sustainable development school located in Lausanne, Switzerland) where window blind operation was studied via web cam over period of 1 year to determine how many times the occupants adjusted the position of the blind. 500 000 pictures were analyzed in terms of movement up/down or changing angle of the slats.

Conclusion: Manual blinds moved less than twice per week!

“The worst results are for the facades with manually crank operated blinds. Their inefficiency is twice the one of a facade with motorized solar protections controlled via remote control or wall switch.”

This results in the solar shading most of the time being in a non-optimal position, especially from an energy management perspective.

Automation is the key to performance, savings, security and a healthy indoor climate, but also to secure and maximize the life span of the installation.
